Simple Harmonic Motion

Example: A mass-spring system.

  • Detail: When a mass attached to a spring is pulled and released, it oscillates back and forth around an equilibrium position. The restoring force is proportional to the displacement from that position, described by Hooke’s Law: F=−kxF = -kxF=−kx, where kkk is the spring constant and xxx is the displacement.
