Founding and Early Development (1977-1983)

  • 1977: Oracle was founded as Software Development Laboratories (SDL) by Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates. They aimed to create a relational database management system (RDBMS) based on the theories of Edgar F. Codd, which proposed a model for organizing data using relations (tables).
  • 1979: SDL released Oracle V2, the first commercially available SQL-based RDBMS. This version was pioneering in its use of Structured Query Language (SQL) and transaction management. It was initially designed for the PDP-11 computer and laid the groundwork for future versions.
